Make sure the picture is in focus!
Make sure that the contrast between light and shade is not too much – light and shade are important to give an image life, but if the highlights are so bright they are bleached or if shadow is so deep that features are hidden, then I cannot paint them.
Think about getting down to your pet’s level, or putting him/her on a table so the face is not tilted up too much.
Choose a view taken in good light outside if possible. This will give the truest rendering of colour.
A flash photograph will not give a true colour (unless done by a professional under studio conditions), but may well catch an interesting pose that you and your family like. This could be used as one of the reference photographs.
A front-on pose is not usually successful as a painting – it can be a bit dull. Why not try half or three-quarter profile?
Do you prefer mouth open or closed? I am happy to paint either.
Don’t worry about the red-eye effect – this is easy for me to paint out.
And if you have any questions, then please call me and we can discuss it.
If possible please provide several photographs. Please state which is the preferred image for the pose and I will copy this. Please also say which of the reference pictures is the truest colour match.
